September Book Club

On Saturday, September 27th, nine of us gathered to discuss the Jane Austen-inspired books that we ready this month! I was pleasantly surprised by the number of us who chose to challenge ourselves by reading Austen's own work, and loved hearing about more modern works that she inspired (directly and indirectly). If you're more a listener than a reader, don't forget to check out this month's Libro.fm playlist by clicking the link below!
Octember Book Club

October is wedding season for me and as such, I'll be traveling for most of the month. Therefore, I am combining October and November's book clubs into one extra-long one with the theme: Dark Academia & A Dish! We will get into the fall spirit with this spooky theme, combined with tasty homemade treats in honor National Cookbook Month (but be warned, you have to cook them first...). So swing by with you thoughts on a Dark Academia book of your choosing and some scrumptious sides over which to discuss our favorite subject: books! Note that there will be NO Facebook event this month - instead, please RSVP by e-mailing lasismoregbg@gmail.com and request to be added to our WhasApp group.
2025 Book Bracket - September Edition

This month, I finished The English Bookshop's reading challenge with Friends of Dorothy (and if I made a bracket for least favorite book of the year, this one would win!). As for the rest of the books, there was TOUGH competition this month for the winner, and I'm honestly still not confident in my final pick. Honorable mentions go to Sense & Sensibility, Mansfield Park, We All Want Impossible Things, and Dear Edward. Can't recommend them enough!
National Cookbook Month

October is National Cookbook Month, so to celebrate, all cookbooks are BUY 2 GET 1 FREE! Please note that this offer is available in store ONLY!
And once you've tried out some new recipes, don't forget to bring one in to our next book club to share with us on November 9th while we discuss our dark academia picks.

Author Spotlight: Sarah MacLean

In case you missed it (and my condolences if you did), but this weekend was BOKMÄSSAN and Gothenburg was flooded with authors and readers alike! I somehow managed to convince the wonderful Sarah MacLean - author of over 20 historical romance books as well as her newest book, These Summer Storms, a departure from the genre - to stop by and talk to me both about her books and shop recommendations (spoiler alert: she picked Crazy Rich Asians, The Summer Pact, and So Not Meant to Be).
Make sure you also check out her romance podcast Fated Mates, available wherever you get your podcasts! I myself listed to an episode this weekend and absolutely loved it! So fun to hear an author gush about the books she reads, and she has a great podcasting voice to boot. Podcast stickers are available in-store so pick one up when you're in the area!
Author Spotlight:
Andrew O'Hagan

Believe it or not, I also managed to get the award-winning Scottish author, Andrew O'Hagan, into the shop during his quick trip to Gothenburg. Despite all he has accomplished, he was incredibly warm, generous, and humble. He spent twenty or so minutes perusing the shelves to find books both for himself and to recommend to our customers (while he walked away with Disgrace and The Life of Graham Greene, he left Underworld on the shelf for a lucky local reader). We also got to chat with local celebrity Rosie from The British Shop, who Andrew has actually seen perform live in Scotland! And last but not least, we found some time to talk about a few of his more recent books, Mayflies (which I am planning to read this fall) and Caledonian Road. Make sure to pick up a copy from our friends at The English Bookshop if you haven't already!
Nina's Book Nook

This month, our resident crime enthusiast Nina has read and recommended two books from our shelves. Read her reviews below - both books are available now in-store and online!
The Holmes Affair, Graham Moore: Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle gets involved with the search for a killer who targets young women. A hundred years later, Harold White, a Sherlock fanatic, finds himself in the search for Conan Doyle's lost diary. What secrets will the diary reveal? A perfect book if you like historical fiction or love Sherlock Holmes.
The Double Comfort Safari Club, Alexander McCall Smith: Mma Ramotswe, Botswana's first female detective, tries to track down a safari guide on behalf of her American client. She also tries to find out if her friend's husband is having an affair. This book is a part of the No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. A blend of charm, wit, humour, and Mma Ramotswe's ponderings on life. This book is a relaxing feel-good read.
